Clinical Effects of Perdipine^(¢ç)-LA in Elderly Hypertensive Patients

Abstract
To evaluate the hypotensive effect and incidence of side effects of nicardipine in elderly hypertensive paitent blood pressure, heart rate and side effects were observed during 8 weeks¢¥ treatment with Perdipine¢ç- LA, continuous releasing tablets of nicardipine, 40mg twice a day in 15 younger hypertensive patients (<60 years of age, group I) and older hypertensive patients( ?60 years of age, group II ).
Blood pressure reduced significantly after 2 weeks¢¥ administration of Perdipine¢ç-LA and this reduction of blood pressure maintained throughout the whole 8 weeks¢¥ period of treatment in both groups (p<0.01 in both groups). But there¢¥s no significant difference of hypotensive effect between 2 groups (group I : 170¡¾19/104¡¾6 vs 142¡¾17/89¡¾13 mmHg, group II : 169¡¾10/101¡¾7 vs 143 ¡¾ 16 /87 ¡¾ 10 mrnHg) and pulse rate didn¢¥t change significantly during treatment in both hypertensive groups.
Mild headache, conjunctival injection or epigastric discomfort developed in 3 cases(2 in group I , 1 in group II) during treatment. There were 3 cases with angina, 4 cases with old CVA and 4 cases with diabetes mellitus among the subjects studied, but no one complained of aggravation of angina or neurologic symptoms and no significant elevation-of fasting blood sugar level was noted during treatment.
These results indicate that nicardipine is as effective in elderly hypertensives as in young hypertensives, and cause no more frequent side effects in elderly hypertensives.
